SYNSPECIES was an audiovisual project created by Elías Merino and Tadej Droljc. The project is inspired by virtual ecologies – unstable morphological spaces that emerge from a devastating interaction of co-existing unrelated entities with the void.
The self-titled audiovisual performance and album SYNSPECIES explore unnatural oneiric fields inhabited by multi-scaled audiovisual objects that are cross pollinating, mutating, adopting and fighting for their space and existence. They co-create a world of unreal physicality that is constantly kneaded by violent forces.
SYNSPECIES sonics feed on tangles made by computer-based code and analogue and acoustic sources. They originate from algorithmic computer-generated sound synthesis, acoustic instruments recorded by performers from CeReNeM (Centre for Research in New Music), the student choir from the University of Huddersfield, and Stockholm’s EMS Buchla and Serge modular systems. All the material was crafted, orchestrated, processed and articulated by custom instruments and generative systems built in Supercollider and MAX/Msp. The vivid abstract architectures of SYNSPECIES fluctuate in an ambiguous pulsating time, hybridising and shaping new shapes confined in a perpetual disintegration process. This project just tries to portrait the states of bewilderment and the embodiment of the sacred.
Elías Merino is a Madrid-based artist working primarily with sound. His practice spans installation, composition, and live performance, moving between algorithmic abstract computer music, experimental electronics, and instrumental works. His work often explores turbulence and vehemence through timbral physicality, shifting temporal perspectives, fragmented narratives, and the poetics of otherness.
He also develops parallel interests around speculative futures and fiction, post-digital materiality, notions of the sacred, and object-oriented composition, which occasionally inform and intertwine with his musical practice. Alongside his solo work, he collaborates in several ongoing projects: he is one half of the audiovisual duo SYNSPECIES (with Tadej Droljc) and of Grievous Bodily Harmonics (with Rian Treanor).
