BODY—a quadraphonic loudspeaker system that rotates at varying frequencies. Originally conceived as a live performance interweaving audio, video, and light kinetics, this work has been presented at renowned international festivals, including Mutek, Elevate, and Sonica. For this LP, composer Peter Kutin shifts focus by dissolving the visual elements and concentrating exclusively on the sonic characteristics of the instrument, arranging them specifically for the stereo format.

The sound sculpture serves as the sole source of sound, dictating both the structure and dynamics of the entire record. Its rotation acts as a conceptual motor, presenting sound as a constantly evolving, process-driven phenomenon. Each track becomes a segment along a circular path—fragmentary yet unified within an overarching form. The cyclical motion generates a productive tension between repetition and the inherent differences that emerge from it. The coarse and textured quality of the sounds imparts a tactile dimension to some tracks, making them feel almost tangible.

The recording process—using various microphone placements along a circular trajectory, which inspired the album’s title—creates a unique, three-dimensional rendering of the musical elements. Contrasting tempos, rhythmic disruptions, and frequency shifts interact like a machine, breaking rigid patterns and introducing unpredictable sonic landscapes. Here, music is not presented as an abstract phenomenon but as a physical substance, one that directly impacts the listener’s body.

This setup enables Kutin to explore oscillating temporalities between physical (object-based) and musical (material-based) motion. These dualities simultaneously seek stability while embracing transformation. Linear sequences dissolve into pulsating states where proximity and distance, continuity and variation, merge and dissipate.

Music as a process of becoming.
