Works for Marimba, Amplified Cymbal, Synthesizers
The process initially began with the purchase of a Marimbaphone by my grandfather Anton Koenig for me in 2004 whence deciding between Classical Percussion or Jazz Drums for my studies.
Since I ultimately chose the latter, this alien object was awkwardly lingering around my various apartments and rehearsal rooms in Vienna for almost 20 years. In 2022, I picked it up and started practicing with 4 mallets and a knowhow of morphing rhythms and ideas. Moreover, the composing process began to sample all the moments, where the 3 Freeze pedals bled into each other and created roomy drones. These “Freezes" were again sought out and produced with my not-long-ago-created “amplified cymbal” sounds and a bunch of synthesizers, like the Prophet5, to create an album-length piece of music. At the end of the process, I wanted to dedicate this to my grandfather, who taught me drums, and so much more about music and life.
Born in St. Pölten, Austria, Lukas Koenig worked with a variety of international artists such as Moor Mother, Dälek, Guilty Simpson, Nappy Nina, Sensational, Reggie Washington, Franz Hautzinger, Fennesz, Briggan Krauss, Mariam Rezaei, Mette Rasmussen, Malcolm Braff, Jorge Sánchez-Chiong, Wolfgang Mitterer, Victoria Shen, Wolfgang Puschnig, Shahzad Ismaily, Audrey Chen, Julien Desprez, Farida Amadou, Elliott Sharp, Bilderbuch, Koenigleopold, Klangforum Wien, Jazzwerkstatt Wien, and many more. Aside recording and performing with Mopcut, PLF and The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters and other projects, he is writing/planning music for his solo work and commissions for marimba freezes or amplified cymbal. Lukas Koenig is based in Vienna, Austria.
