Peter Kutin is a prolific sound and media-artist working at various intersections of today's advanced music scene. He is a member and producer of the digital post-punk trio PLF (with Freya Edmondes and Lukas König), has written music for ensembles, cinema and radio-productions alongside making a name for himself with his kinetic audio-light works, for which he was awarded the Prix-Ars Electronica for Digital Music & Soundart in 2019, among others.
This release reinterprets the site-specific compositions created for choreographer Philipp Gehmacher over the past four years. It recreates the live immersive multi-channel sound experience for binaural headphone listening, capturing the key compositional parameters and spatial relations presented in the live work.
Kutin's work here is based on recordings made at various performance venues of Gehmacher's pieces - including the Museum of Modern Art Vienna, Parts/Rosa's rehearsal hall in Brussels, Vienna’s Akademietheater a.o.. Philipp Gehmacher's choreographic work explores the idea and relationships of time, movement and space at their very foundations. Peter Kutin's music captures the essence of this concept beautifully. It sometimes seems to freeze and precisely because of this, creates a state in which the linear perception of time is lost or forgotten for example in CGI Memoria or title track »The slowest Urgency«. The release skillfully explores the thin line between chaotic, aggressive sonic-clusters and warm, embracing musical structures, alongside delicate field-recordings. If we pay attention to Kutin's music, a vortex of haunting soundscapes soon develops which is seductive, raw and sometimes even uncanny. Above all, the music confidently speaks for itself, even when detached from a former visual focus.
